Dr Amsalu Tolessa Mossissa

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW | BIORESOURCE ENGINEERING

Short Bio

Dr Mossissa holds a doctorate in Chemical Engineering (2022) from Stellenbosch University (SU), with research expertise bordering on probabilistic techno-economic analysis of renewable energy generation in smallholder farming systems within the context of the water-energy-food nexus. He holds an MSc (Chemical Engineering) (2015) from the Addis Ababa Institute of Technology (AAiT), Addis Ababa University (AAU), Ethiopia, and a BSc (Industrial Chemistry) (2009) from Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia.

He has over five years of research experience working as a Researcher of Bioenergy and Biochemical Research at the Ethiopian Environment and Forest Research Institute (currently known as Ethiopian Forestry Development) in Addis Ababa. Additionally, he served as the Head of the Bioenergy and Biochemical Research Division for three years at the same institute before beginning his PhD at SU. Following the completion of his PhD study, Amsalu returned to his home country and continued his research career as a Researcher II, and later as a Senior Researcher and Research Centre Director, for over a year at his previous institute before commencing his postdoctoral research at SU. Amsalu has over 20 publications in international peer-reviewed journals. His current research focuses on quantifying the potential benefits of (bio)-renewable energy for smallholder farmers with an emphasis on the water-energy-food nexus.
